In the small online world which seems to have no borders, you may be puzzled by a notification that an online service is not available in your country. Unfortunately, it is a common situation in some regions recently. That’s why more Internet users prefer to use a VPN (virtual private network) to surf the net freely. If you have any doubt about the usability of this software, there are VPN services that provide a free trial period. With the free trial, you can test a VPN service before buying a certain VPN client. One of the paid VPNs that provides a free trial is SaferVPN. We’d like to share the advantages and disadvantages of its’ use in this SaferVPN review.

What is SaferVPN?

SaferVPN is an Israel-based service, that was established in 2013. It provides over 700 servers in 34 countries.

It offers applications for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, routers, and extensions for Chrome and Firefox browsers.

SaferVPN provides a secure connection using AES 256-bit key encryption. Also, it has some useful features, like Kill Switch and Wi-Fi security.

SaferVPN application for Mac

The application looks like a small window. You can click on the location icon to select the country you want to join and then click the Connect button to start your secure connection.

Here in the window, you can see your current location on the map, your new virtual IP address and the time you have been connected to the VPN server.

Note that you can’t easily change a virtual location (VPN server). First, you have to disconnect and then choose another VPN server.

The are several options in the hamburger menu in the top right corner: My account, Get free service, Upgrade, Settings, Sign out.

You can manage the following options in the Settings menu:

  • Enable the app to run on startup.
  • Enable the app to send non-personally identifiable app data.
  • Select a VPN protocol (OpenVPN or L2TP/IPSec).
  • Enable the app to secure your data while you browse over untrusted Wi-Fi networks.
  • Enable VPN Kill Switch to stop all Internet traffic if the VPN connection drops.
  • Run speed test.

SaferVPN Chrome extension

The SaferVPN Chrome extension allows you to use 500MB of data for free each month. Note that unlike the SaferVPN application, the VPN Chrome extension encrypts only your web browser data. Using the extension, you can change your real location to bypass censorship and visit geo-restricted websites that were blocked in your country.

Unfortunately, you can’t use the SaferVPN application and SaferVPN Chrome extension on one device simultaneously, as they conflict and the extension stops working.

Is SaferVPN safe?

The SaferVPN uses an AES 256-bit key encryption, as it is presently the safest way to protect data. In other words, an offender needs to check about 10168 (1 with 168 zeros following) combinations to crack your data protected with a VPN.

SaferVPN uses different protocols (IKEv2, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP), depending on the platform on which it will be used. Thanks to these protocols, you get a fast, secure and stable connection. Besides, the Perfect Forward Secrecy feature rotates encryption keys every 60 minutes.

SaferVPN speed test

This VPN service provides a connection with a good speed. IT’s a common rule for VPNs that the closer the server is to your location, the higher the connection speed is. So, the closest servers to your real location will provide nearly the same speed that you have without a VPN. In the application, there is an option to check the speed of your current connection using the website. SaferVPN has several streaming servers, which are useful for those who love to stream channels.
